What Causes Pain?
In Traditional Chinese Medicine there is a saying: there is pain when there is no movement, when there is no movement there is pain.
Movement in this case is regarded as circulation of blood and fluids, and flow of energy. (energy can be kinetic movement – like flexing your leg)
The ides is that when circulation of blood and energy stops there is a build up of pressure in the body which results in pain. So the reality is that the pain is just an indicator that the body is stuck or stagnated.
Stagnation occurs for many reasons such as: sedentary position for prolonged periods (like sitting at a desk, which limits this conversation to about… everybody), an injury from a fall or a hit, overuse of an area (repetitive stress) and dehydration to name a few.
Thus the Qigong remedy for this is to – promote circulation – (brilliant huh… ) Here are a few types of practices that promote circulation:
Stretching – elongating the muscles and tendons, which helps to reduce pressure on the joints and promote the circulation of blood and fluids
Internal circulation exercises – gentle movements that circulate blood and fluids through the body tissues and organs (I have many of these types of exercises marked as Qigong warm ups or therapeutic exercises on this site)
In any case its a good idea to get into a regular routine to keep your body in good “circulation”. This will help to offset the daily abuse that we put our selves through.
