Three Major Horse Stances

I have heard a few different stories about how horse stance got its name; the first is that the position of the legs looks like you are strateling a horse – legs open to the sides and knees bent. The other is that its the postiont that you assume when holding the reigns of a horse, because its a stable and grounded position.

Either way the Horse Stance has become the most widely used Qigong position practiced.

The balanced position of a horse stance makes it a perfect exercise for aligning the hips and spine. Because you sit in the stance for anywhere from 1 to 30 minuets at a time your body learns to gradually balances itself. On many occasions I have seen that Horse stance has greatly improved or even fixed ones posture. This is not an overnight fix – it can take a few months to have affect, but for something as important as posture its worth the time put in.

Horse Stance has evolved into several different postures through the generations, these three have become the popular:

The Small Horse Stance – a narrow stance with the feet shoulder width apart (read small horse stance entry for more)

Forward Horse Stance – a wide horse stance with the feet at least time and a half your shoulder width apart and knees bent forward.

Open Horse Stance – another wide horse stance with the feet about two times your shoulder width apart and knees bent to outward.
