Posture Practice
A Qigong posture is basically a position thats focuses on a specific alignment. And the alignment influences the flow of energy through the body.
Qigong Postures follow two primary principles of alignment, Hollowing (contracting) and elongation (lengthening).
Hollowing – concentration of force towards or through the center
This is a postural method of guiding energy that focuses on rounding the body along its natural curvature resulting in efficient transfer of force. This is used while holding many of the postures and stances of Qigong. It is a similar alignment technique that many gymnast use while holding challenging positions.
the picture below demonstrates the flow of force
Hollowing is used for many of the strength training postures and as a general relaxed pose for therapeutic Qigong.
Elongation – stretching away from the center
This is the opposite of hollowing where the focus is extending the body away from the spine and hips. This method is used to stretch the body to reduce tension and stagnation.
This type of pose is mostly used with Qigong stretching, but can also be present in some forms of strength training such as muscle and tendon Qigong.
