The Seven Dantiens

The Dantiens

The circulating energy of the body culminates at primary junctions called Dantien’s (also known as energy gates).  Dantiens are located along the central points of the torso where force is transferred through.  Because they are the fulcrums of energy in the body they are said to be the storage points for our Qi and are the key to the potential work we perform.

There are many different Dantiens in the body of which seven, are of particular importance, they are:

Crown Dantien (7th gate)

Located at the top of the head between the apexes of both ears, this dantien is the highest energy point in the body, and the strongest point of connection to the energy of the sky and heaven.  (It is also known as Bai Hui – 100 Convergences in acupuncture).  The crown Dantien is considered to be the closest connection to the energy of the spirit.  Its manifestation is white light

Brow Dantien (third eye) (6th gate)

Located on the head between the eyebrows, this Dantien relates to the functioning of the mind, awareness, concentration and the functioning of the pituitary.  (It corresponds with the acupuncture location Yin Tang – Hall of Impression).  This Dantien manifests as the color violet.

Throat Dantien (5th gate)

Located directly above the sternum, this dantien relates to the functioning of the voice and thyroid.  (It corresponds with the acupuncture location known as Tian Tu – Celestial Chimney in acupuncture).   This Dantien manifests as the color sky blue.

Chest Dantien (heart Dantien)(4th gate)

Located at the center of the chest approximately at the level of the 4th rib.  This Dan Tien is the transfer point of energy to the arms and chest.  It relates to the heart, lungs and the thymus gland.  (It corresponds to the acupuncture location of Tan Zhong – Chest Center). This Dantien manifests as the color light green.

Central Dantien (diaphragm Dantien)(3rd gate)

Located in midline of the body slightly above the center point between the sternum and the umbilicus. The Middle Dantien is the transfer point of energy from the Chest Dantien to the Lower Dantien.  It corresponds to the energies of the Digestive system, the diaphragm and the adrenals, and relates to our emotional self  (It loosely corresponds to the acupuncture location of Wan Zhong – Central Venter).  This Dantien manifests as the color yellow gold.

Lower Dantien (Source dantien)(2nd gate)

Located about one hand width below the umbilicus.  It is situated in the direct center of the body almost equal distance from the end of each extremity and is the main transfer point of energy in the body.   The lower Dantien relates to the Ming Men – the Life Gate, which is a non-structural entity that houses the primary source of “Yang Qi” in the body (more on this in other sections).  This is considered the main storage point of energy in the body.  Because of this, it is the focus of many styles of Qigong training.   The source Dantien relates to the reproductive glands; testes and ovaries and manifests as the color Orange.

Perineum Dantien (1st Dantien)

Located between the external genitals and the anus, this dantien represents the lowest energy gate in the body and the closest connection to the energy of the earth, it relates to the anal and sexual orifices and sexual energies.  (This Dantien corresponds to the acupuncture location known as Hui Yin – Reaching Yin).  It manifests as the color red.

You may have noted a surprising similarity to Chakras (from what what i can tell they are practically the same) – This demonstrates the strong crossover between the ancient cultures of Asia.  This picture is actually a very nice depiction of the Chakras – I happened to like it more than some of the Dantien pictures so I am using it to demonstrate the Dantiens.

“You may have noted a surprising similarity to Chakras (from what what i can tell they are practically the same) ” This is because you are talking about the Chacra system (or Energy gate in the chinese system) and not the Dantiens. There are only 3 Dantien which are much bigger zone in the body then the energy gates. The lower Dantien is located in the lower abdominal area just below the navel and Ming Men. The middle Dantien is located in the upper chest from the diafragm to the troath and the upper Dantien is the head.

Hi Fabou -
Great comment! Thanks for your input. Yes it’s true that Most Qigong practices only recognize the Lower, Middle and Upper Dantiens, which makes sense as these Dantiens are the largest and most influential fields of energy in the body.

It’s less common to hear about the other energy gates as Dantiens because they have less impact on the body. Because much of my training and instruction revolves around drawing or transferring energy from and through these different energy regions they are all recognized as Dantiens, so I wanted to mention them.

I was debating whether or not to have the first post regard the three Dantiens that you nicely outlined and then follow it up with the Seven Dantiens post. So thanks for your comment! (Actually this would make an interesting post) .
