The Respiratory System – a Qigong Perspective

respiratory-systemIn Qigong the Respiratory system involves Three important functions: Absorption of energy, Exhaust of Toxins and Respiratory movement.

Absorption of energy – In Qigong philosophy air is a major source or our vital Qi and inhalation is the process in which we absorb this energy from the outside world.  Once the energy has entered into the body it fills the Dantiens, meridians, organs and tissues with power.  In Qigong when you are inhaling it’s as if your lungs and skin are absorbing air. (Imagine the lungs expanding and the skin pores opening when you inhale)

In a modern prospective we can recognize Oxygen as the vital power source for our cells that fuel metabolism and restore our body. (See Krebs cycle)(see heart and lungs)

Exhaust of Toxins – Qigong has long understood that the regular process of living produces turbid energy (dirty energy) and toxins.  And when these toxins do not leave the body it will lead to stagnation and illness.  Exhalation is the method to release the dirty energy from the body

As we know Carbon Dioxide the bi product of respiration (respiratory metabolism) is a bodily toxin.  A high concentration of Carbon Dioxide is one of the causes of High blood acidity. (See acid base balance)(see gas exchange)

Respiratory Movement – In Qigong the movement that is produced by breathing is understood as an essential part of circulation.  Ie: Inhalation produces a stretching and expansion of the upper body and simultaneously produces a mild compression in the lower body, while exhalation returns the body to a relaxed state.  This motion serves as an internal pump that promotes the circulation of blood, fluids and energy. (see movement of the breath post)

Thus poor breathing habits lead to decreased absorption of energy, increased storage of toxins and impaired internal circulation (that’s a bit to think about for us all)
