Qigong Blood
Blood is the transport medium for the primary metabolic components of our body. It carries oxygen to cells, delivers raw material for growth and repair and removes toxic byproducts such as carbon dioxide and metabolic waste. Our body is fundamentally dependant on the proper circulation of blood, without it the tissues, organ systems and cells cannot repair or grow.
In Qigong each system has an intricate connection with Blood. The digestive tract gathers and breaks down raw material that is sent to the liver to be further processed into blood. The Lungs infuse oxygen and extract Carbon dioxide from the blood. The Kidneys filter the toxic substances and regulate the fluid levels of the blood, the kidneys are also considered to be a regulator of bone marrow (a source of blood cell production) (In modern medicine we know that the kidneys help blood production by releasing erythropoietin). And finally the Heart propels the blood throughout the body.
Some general conditions of the blood
Quite often overwork, over strain and general wear and tear can lead to pockets of swelling or tissue damage which impairs blood circulation. This condition is known as “Blood Stagnation”. Blood Stagnation may cause signs of pain, irritability, possibly swelling and fatigue.
Blood stagnation can occur without noticeable symptoms as well, most people suffer some level of blood stagnation however when it occurs for long periods of time it can have detrimental affects on the body such as necrotic tissue or even cancerous tissue. The areas most likely to suffer are those subject to the greatest amount of pressure such as in the lower back and abdominal cavity. When there is Blood Stagnation performing Qi Moving Exercises help to undo the blockage.
Sometimes there is a general lack of blood in the body due to impaired production, lack of protein or deficiency of vital nutrients. This condition is called “Blood Deficiency”. This condition may cause a lack of strength, pale complexion, possible signs of fatigue, dry brittle hair, dry skin, poor concentration and blurry vision. Though this condition fundamentally requires dietary attention Qi Building Exercises can be beneficial in helping the body restore its level of vitality to produce more blood
